Common Korean phone scams

These are the most-reported caller fraud patterns in South Korea right now.

Prosecutor / Police Voice Phishing (Boicepishing)
HIGH RISK

Callers impersonate prosecutors or police officers claiming your account has been used in money laundering. They demand you transfer funds to a "safe account" for investigation. Korean prosecutors never request phone transfers. Report immediately to the Financial Crimes Investigation Unit or call 112.

KakaoTalk Gift Card Extortion
HIGH RISK

Callers pose as family members or bosses via KakaoTalk requesting urgent gift card purchases. They ask for pin codes by message. This is the most common method for instant financial extortion in Korea. Never send gift card codes to unverified contacts.

Fake KT / SKT Tech Support Call
MEDIUM RISK

Callers claim to be from KT or SKT technical support warning of billing errors or account hacks. They request remote access to your device to "fix" the problem. No Korean carrier makes unsolicited tech-support calls. Hang up and call your carrier's official helpline.

Frequently asked questions

Accessing publicly available carrier allocation data and community reports about phone numbers is consistent with South Korea's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) 2011 and MSIT regulations. Searqle does not access subscriber records held by MSIT-licensed operators.
The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) manages number allocation and operator licensing. SK Telecom (SKT), KT, and LG U+ are the three licensed mobile network operators. KISA (Korea Internet & Security Agency) handles cybersecurity incidents.
Report voice phishing to the Financial Intelligence Unit at 1332, or file a report with the Korean National Police Agency at 182. For internet fraud, contact KISA at 118. You can also block and report scam numbers directly through your carrier's app.
New users can start with a 7-day trial for just €1.00 — giving full access to Searqle’s core search capabilities. After the trial, plans start at €13.90/week (includes 4 search credits) or €34.90/month (includes 20 search credits). All plans include phone, email, and photo search.
Searqle supports three search types: phone number lookup, email address lookup, and reverse image (photo) search. Each draws from public records, social profiles, and community data to build a comprehensive identity report.
Searqle pulls together publicly available data into one report. Depending on the number, results may include the registered owner's name, date of birth, profile photos, email addresses, physical addresses (current and past), known relatives, social media accounts, employment background, and any data breach exposures linked to that identity.

Don't leave that unknown number unanswered.
