Common South African phone scams

These are the most-reported caller fraud patterns in South Africa right now.

SARS Refund / Tax Debt Scam
HIGH RISK

Callers impersonate SARS (South African Revenue Service) claiming you are owed a tax refund or owe an unpaid debt. They ask for banking details to process the refund or demand immediate payment via EFT. SARS never requests banking details over the phone. Verify at sars.gov.za or call 0800 00 7277.

Bank Card Cloning / Vishing
HIGH RISK

Callers claim your bank card has been compromised and ask you to read back the card number, CVV, and PIN to "block" the fraud. No South African bank will ever ask for your full card details or PIN over the phone. Hang up and call your bank's fraud line immediately.

Lottery / Competition Winning Notification
MEDIUM RISK

Automated calls announce you have won a competition you never entered and request advance taxes or fees. The National Lottery (Ithuba) only contacts verified winners through official registered channels. Report suspected lottery fraud to 0800 003 321.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Accessing publicly available information about a phone number is lawful under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) 2013, provided the data is used for lawful purposes. Searqle does not access subscriber records held by ICASA-licensed operators.
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) manages number allocation, operator licensing, and consumer protection. Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, and Telkom Mobile are the licensed mobile network operators.

New users can start with a 7-day trial for just €1.00 — giving full access to Searqle’s core search capabilities. After the trial, plans start at €13.90/week (includes 4 search credits) or €34.90/month (includes 20 search credits). All plans include phone, email, and photo search.
Searqle supports three search types: phone number lookup, email address lookup, and reverse image (photo) search. Each draws from public records, social profiles, and community data to build a comprehensive identity report.
A full Searqle report can include: owner name, age, date of birth, profile photos, known aliases, phone numbers, email addresses, current and previous addresses, relatives and known associates, employer and education history, social media profiles, online presence signals, and data breach exposure details — depending on what is publicly available.
