Common New Zealand phone scams

These are the most-reported caller fraud patterns in New Zealand right now.

IRD Tax Debt / Refund Scam
HIGH RISK

Callers claim to be from Inland Revenue Department (IRD), saying you owe an unpaid tax debt or are entitled to a refund — and pressure you to act immediately. IRD never demands payment by gift card, cryptocurrency, or wire transfer, and will always communicate through official channels first. Hang up and contact IRD directly on 0800 775 247.

ACC Overpayment Scam
HIGH RISK

Fraudsters impersonate the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), claiming you've been overpaid and must repay immediately or face legal action. The real ACC will always send official correspondence by mail before any phone contact. Never make a payment over the phone without first verifying through acc.co.nz or calling ACC directly.

Fake Amazon / Netflix Billing
MEDIUM RISK

Automated calls claim your Amazon or Netflix account has been charged for a large purchase you didn't make — press 1 to dispute. This is designed to get you connected with a fraudster who will request card or banking details. Neither Amazon nor Netflix call customers unsolicited about billing. Hang up and check your account directly.

Frequently asked questions

Carrier and number-type data is sourced from Commerce Commission NZ telephone number allocation records, updated weekly. Community reports are user-submitted and moderated for consistency. Owner name and address data comes from publicly accessible NZ directories. Prepaid or recently ported numbers may show limited detail.
Yes — when the number is linked to publicly available records. Registered business lines and listed personal numbers typically return owner name and address history. Prepaid numbers, anonymous VoIP lines, or unlisted numbers may return limited or no name results, but carrier and community report data is still shown.
NZ numbers starting with 09 are Auckland and Northland landlines, 04 is Wellington, 03 covers the South Island including Christchurch, 07 is Waikato and Bay of Plenty, and 06 covers Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, and Manawatū. Mobile numbers start with 021, 022, 027, or 028. Numbers starting with 0800 are freephone — free to call. 0900 numbers are premium rate and can be expensive to call back.
Yes. Looking up publicly available information about a phone number is legal under New Zealand's Privacy Act 2020. Searqle displays only information that is already publicly accessible — we do not access private subscriber records held by carriers or government bodies.
Phone number allocation in NZ is overseen by the Commerce Commission under the Telecommunications Act 2001. The national numbering plan is managed by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). Carriers such as Spark, One NZ, and 2degrees are licensed to operate number ranges under this framework.
Don't call back unknown numbers from your call log — search the number here first to check the risk score and community reports. If you believe you've received a scam call, report it to CERT NZ at cert.govt.nz or Netsafe at netsafe.org.nz. For financial fraud, contact your bank immediately.
New users can start with a 7-day trial for just €1.00 — giving full access to Searqle's core search capabilities to explore the platform before committing. After the trial, plans start at €13.90/week (includes 4 search credits) or €34.90/month (includes 20 search credits). All plans include phone, email, and photo search.
Searqle supports three search types: phone number lookup, email address lookup, and reverse image (photo) search. Each draws from public records, social profiles, and community data to build a comprehensive identity report. You can also run background checks combining multiple data points in a single search.
A full Searqle report draws from publicly available sources and can include: identity details (name, age, aliases), profile photos, email and phone connections, residential history, family links, workplace and education records, social media accounts, and data breach flags — the depth of results depends on the public record for that number.
